About The Montclair Village Association

Montclair Village Association

The Montclair Village Association (MVA) is a Business Improvement District (B.I.D.) made up of approximately 230 retail and service businesses located in Montclair Village. The MVA was previously known as the Montclair Business Association (MBA) for over 50 years.
In 2001 the businesses located in Montclair Village voted to become a Business Improvement District by agreeing to pay an additional assessment each year to the City of Oakland based on their gross revenue. In 2010 the Association created a new category of Associate Membership, to permit businesses located adjacent to the Village to join and enjoy the same benefits of Association membership.
The MVA’s mission is to support and enhance the Montclair Village business district to be a vibrant destination for MVA members, residents, and visitors. The MVA is a 501(c)iii nonprofit, make a tax deductible donation today, and support the mission of the MVA – Click HERE for Donor information or to make the MVA a part of your planned giving! All meetings are subject to the provisions of The Brown Act (a pdf document). Currently the following organizational groups meet on a regular basis. Special teams or groups may be formed from time-to-time as determined by the Board:

Board of Directors

To manage the Association the MVA membership elects new or returning Board of Directors members annually for two year terms from its membership. The Board is comprised of four officer positions (President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer) and up to 17 Directors, all of whom have one vote in all Board matters. Officers and Directors should represent a cross-section of merchants in the Village, both retail and professional/service. A paid Executive Director reports to the Board and performs functions assigned by them.
An Executive Committee, composed of the Association’s Officers, meets monthly to act on behalf of the Board and/or to provide guidance to the Board. A Nominations Committee is responsible for obtaining qualified Board candidates for review by May of each year. A roster of Board-approved candidates is sent to all MVA members in June for ratification. Ratified members begin their term on July 1 and end on June 30. Existing Board members may be re-elected to subsequent terms if approved and ratified.

Board meetings

are held the last Wednesday morning of each month (except December) and at other times as may be deemed necessary. These meetings, like all MVA meetings, are open to the public. Merchants and interested community members are always welcome to listen and share any concerns or ask questions.
Minutes of these Board meetings are posted to this Website once they have been approved by the Board, usually at the next monthly meeting. The latest Financial Statement of the Association is updated regularly. A Financial Report is available from the MVA office upon request.
